There's Music In the Air

(Ivan Johnson -- The Institution Blues Album / 2006 / USA)

The final touches of a cutting-edge psychology experiment have now been completed on Patient I.J., marking twelve years of non-intrusive neuroscience research since the preliminary experiments were first started in 1995.

Ivan Johnson (Patient I.J.) suffers cyclical episodes of incapacitating hebephrenic schizophrenia that has not been helped in any way by any currently available medications.

So as a last resort, doctors at the Milton S. Hershey Clinical Psychiatry Center decided to fully give in to Ivan's delusions of grandeur and allowed him to pursue his "dream" of becoming a blues singer musician (while still in the safety of the courtyards at the Center).

The doctors supplied Ivan with a guitar and set up a small recording apparatus before him (and also quietly became bystanders and audience members in the z-courtyard), where Ivan's delusions and hallucinations became uniquely and productively reflected in the reality around him (thus producing The Institution Blues Album) rather than remaining stagnate in the confines of his own mind.

This simple and therapeutic method (of building up a mentally ill patient's motivation level) is known by its few practitioners as Open Flow Excitation. The method aims at identifying the patient's recurring inner-most patterned wishes and desires, and then goes about systematically constructing and guiding the environment so that the patient can do nothing but immerse and encourage himself into fulfilling his own inner-most wishes.

Why had you scare quoted his "dream"?

Will I "realize" "my" "own"?

Did you ever know that my family is the imbecility beneath my wings?

j crockett- We wrote down "dream" because Ivan experiences both literal dreams (at night when sleeping) and figurative life-long dreams of becoming a blues musician. In fact, these "dreams" have become almost obsessive throughout Ivan's everyday life over the last few years.

And as far as "reaching" your own dreams -- first, I hope you can differentiate between the definitions. And I hope that you only persue the ones that you can reach!

And yes, it always begins with the family.

Thanks for stopping by!

You're right. I would only kill you if I could. Tho it would make several people silently happy. You're one of three bullies I've met who enjoy making enemies. Yet in "art", soullessness **can be fashionable, especially among your typical suburban Franco/Anglophiles who've never been beyond earshot their favouxrite authority.

I finally downloaded this "release." talk about your high production values. You don't even bother to teach this crooner a chord. that would make meaning. which nobody expects from flic.

Wow, the stony silence of the little socialite.

It sounds so, sooo... familiar.

You must be enjoying this, as a torturer.

You must have a brilliant mind -- verily, ugly as the sun.

j crockett- May we feature you in one of our posts?

besides, i don't have schizophrenia.. remember? how could any two-bit HMO provide such grandiloquent diagnoses for you to capitalize upon? plus, no famous grandson or governor's brother ever came close to calling me to suffer your precious hebephrenia. they didn't even prescribe antidepressants....

j crockett- Don't be shy. I'm talking about maybe a brief interview or something. You don't have to be schizophrenic (by any means) to be here.

I have been taking celexa (antidepressant) since 2 p.m. yesterday, and also back on the controlled meds: klonopin (2mg daily!)

Apparently it is working. I don't burn at all here, today. I'm in a good mood, back from expressing even more love to maureen thorson at her blog reenhead.com/mole/mole.php. God, I love you.. erm, her. Maureen Thorson. I get an endorphine rush each time to visit her blog.. tho the whole "baby eating monster" phase was difficult..

Ah, it's good to be alive :-)

Tell you what, you delete all my nasty comments (dating back at least twenty posts), and I will do your interview, provided you list the terms beforehand.

I love everybody!

I'm interested in learning more about this technique. I have a question, though: How does it apply to patients whose delusions or hallucinations are exclusively negative or intimidating, i.e. sees demons or burning babies?
